The Summit
CWI Summits are proud to announce The South Sudan Petroleum, Energy & Mining Summit, to be held at the Hyatt Regency Dubai hotel, United Arab Emirates on the 17th and 18th of July, 2012. This ground breaking event will be the first of its kind to focus purely on the abundance of opportunities that exist throughout the Republic of South Sudan, across these vital sectors. The Summit will welcome key governmental figures and sector leaders in the efforts to further South Sudan’s desire to become one of the world’s largest oil, energy and mineral producers and exporters. The Summit’s objective is to allow the Ministry of Petroleum and Mining, each Government Body, International Agency and NGO the opportunity to present their current challenges, detail the help and assistance they need, and inform attendees how the international private-sector can help them achieve their goals. During the Summit, investors and businesses wishing to begin or expand their operations in South Sudan will have the opportunity to meet with these senior decision makers on a private one-to-one basis. There will also be the opportunity to meet with participating trade organisations and other donor agencies. These afternoon meetings, requested in advance using CWI Summits scheduling website, will be dedicated to finding solutions to those requirements and entering into possible contractual agreements and MOUs.
The Background and Potential

On July 9th 2011 the world’s newest nation state was born. The Republic of South Sudan (RSS) is the 93rd member of the United Nations and the 54th member of the African Union. Since claiming its independence, there have been significant obstacles for the Republic of South Sudan Government in terms of oil production. However, in early June 2012 a new bill will be passed detailing the regulatory framework to facilitate additional exploration and production in the oil and gas sectors. The lifting of economic sanctions and absence of external debts allows the Government of South Sudan to take the necessary steps to secure its independent future for the people of South Sudan with regards to oil production, significant power generation and the mining of its truly untapped mineral reserves. The Republic of South Sudan has a wealth of natural resources and the government intend to act now; the government are clear that international private investment is the only way forward. Many of South Sudan’s oil fields are yet to be explored; the Government urgently needs to build local and coastal pipelines in order to facilitate the exportation of crude oil. Local refineries and a power generation plant urgently need to be constructed while vast geographical surveying needs to be undertaken. The mining potential for minerals such as gold, iron, copper etc are thought to be unrivalled anywhere in the world. However, the infrastructure is not in place to facilitate such large-scale mining, not to mention other requirements such as accommodation and logistics. Once again, a new Mining bill is currently being passed by the Legislative Assembly allowing the Government of South Sudan to push ahead with its plans. The inviting taxation and investment laws also promote South Sudan as a unique and realistic business and investor destination. The need for complete modernisation and reconstruction in the infrastructure creates tremendous opportunities across all sectors. The expertise of the private-sector is being used ever more frequently to plan and carry out projects on behalf of the Government of South Sudan.
